In 1957 Ford released its line of coupe utility vehicles called the Ranchero. The Ford Ranchero is similar to a pickup truck, but is actually a modified 2-door station wagon that consisted of a front cab and cargo bed. The Ranchero was successful for over twenty years and had over 508,000 made in its production run which ended in 1979. The first generation was based on the full-size Ford Custom. In 1960 Ford decided to make the Ranchero compact and switch to the Falcon as its new base. The 1966 Ranchero would see a mid-year change from Falcon to Fairlane features. When Ford remodeled the Fairlane into the Torino in 1968, the Ranchero followed suit. The seventh and final generation of the Ranchero saw a restyle to the Ford LTD II in 1977.
