Initially based on the compact Ford Falcon platform this model was first marketed as a stand-alone model from 1960 to 1961. When it was released it was widely popular and sold over 116,330 in its first year. By 1962 the Comet was officially branded as a Mercury model and included four trim levels, the Comet, Comet Custom, Comet Special, and S-22 Sport Coupe. Comet production continued to increase at a fast pace and the Caliente model was introduced with available four-door sedan, two-door hardtop, convertible, and a Cyclone two-door hardtop. In the following years Montego joined the Mercury lineup and subsequently phased out the Comet until 1971 when it became the Mercury version of the Ford Maverick for several years.
